When discussing most well-known conflicts, while many may argue about the correct way to fight or resolve the conflict, most people agree on the who, what, when, where, and why. The Israel and Palestine conflict is unique in that many people feel ill-equipped to have an opinion. When discussing this conflict, many disagree on who is fighting, what they are fighting about, when the conflict started, where borders should be, and why there is a conflict. Few disputes are so widely known worldwide that people can’t agree on answers to basic background questions.


Common Views

Let’s review some of the wide-ranging answers to the who, what, when, where, and why regarding the Palestinian and Israel conflict. 


The answer to ‘Who is fighting’ ranges from Israelis, Jewish people, Hamas, Arabs, Muslims, and Jordanians who call themselves Palestinians. 


The answer to ‘What is the conflict over’ ranges from the right to self-determination, nationalism, religion, land theft, Zionism, and antisemitism. 


The response to ‘When the conflict began’ typically goes from 3000 years ago, 1917 when the Balfour Declaration was signed, 1948 when Israel became a country, or during the 1967 Six-Day War. 


Discussions of the Palestine and Israel conflict question typically encompass the viability of a one-state solution, border proposals for a two-state solution, and discussions on where Israelis and Palestineans originated and Indigenous Peoples. 


The “why” questions are generally straightforward: Why is there a conflict? Why does it seem nearly impossible to discuss this conflict without offending someone? And why does it seem impossible to solve this conflict?



Finding a Solution

Many well-meaning people are passionate about the Israel and Palestine conflict and desire to help resolve this conflict. They seek objective facts about Israel and Palestine to support their advocacy or to be well-informed about the conflict. While Israel's war on Hamas continues, it is common to hear people attempt to answer the question, ‘How can we resolve this conflict?’. However, the inability of the global community to form a consensus for the who, what, when, where, and why questions surrounding the Palestine and Israel conflict is partly why this conflict can feel complex and hopeless.
