A Journey Through Time: Unveiling the Secrets of the First Known Property Owners of Israel and Palestine

Updated: Oct 15, 2024

Equities and Trust, a class that resonated deeply with me during my law school years, delved into the crucial concept of equity. This principle, often associated with restorative justice, aims to rectify situations where individuals have been adversely affected by the strict interpretation of the law. It seeks to restore a party to the position they would have been in if a breach had not occurred. The use of tracing in seeking equitable resolutions is a testament to the importance of understanding the full context of a dispute, as arbitrarily picking a starting point can lead to an inequitable solution.

Anyone seeking to understand the complexities of the Israel and Palestine conflict and develop an equitable solution must understand the history that led to current events. Let’s start our journey to discovering an equitable resolution to the Palestine and Israel conflict by tracing land ownership, beginning with the first known inhabitants of modern Israel and Palestine. Land ownership varies across time and culture; therefore, for our analysis, land ownership will be defined as the possession of property.

Archeological evidence reveals a fascinating chapter in the history of Palestine and Israel, where the Natufians emerged as the earliest known inhabitants. Their presence, dating back to the Prehistoric Periods, including the Paleolithic (Old Stone Age) and Mesolithic (Middle Stone Age), over 14,000 years ago, marks a significant milestone in our understanding of this region's past. This was a time when early hominins such as Neanderthals and Denisovans coexisted, and the woolly mammoth roamed the earth.

Natufians started as nomadic hunter-gatherers living in caves. They evolved into agricultural societies partly due to climate change at the end of the last ice age, inventing bread and becoming the earliest farmers. Natufians established settlements that became Jericho, the oldest city in the world, which was created about 9,000 B.C. The Natufians’ sedentary lifestyle during the Mesolithic period is believed to have played a significant role in their People and culture.

Do Natufians eventually merge with surrounding Peoples? Why did the Natufians disappear?

As we continue our exploration from the Natufians to modern-day Israelis and Palestinians, we invite you to subscribe for a more comprehensive understanding. This post will delve into the international definition and criteria for being Indigenous, a topic of significant relevance to our ongoing discussion.
